Long Stems, Small Caps (high CO2)
Growing conditionsLow urgency
Leggy, stretched stems with tiny or trumpet-shaped caps; oysters reaching upward.
Likely causes
- Insufficient fresh-air exchange during fruiting
What to do

- Agrodok 40: Small-scale mushroom cultivation: oyster, shiitake and wood ear mushrooms (Agromisa Foundation and CTA (Peter Oei, 2005)). Long stems with small caps mean the aeration and light requirements were not met; in the complete absence of light, oysters form coral-like stalks without caps; oysters are very sensitive to insufficient aeration and light, and a newspaper-reading light level is a rule of thumb.
- Mushroom Cultivation (IP677) (NCAT / ATTRA (Gabriella Soto-Velez), April 2026). When air exchange is low, oysters grow long thin stems with small caps, lion's mane turns fuzzy and misshapen, musty odours linger and condensation builds up; improve exchange by cracking bags, cutting small slits, opening tent flaps in the day and using a small oscillating fan for gentle movement rather than a direct blast.
