Editorial policy and sources

Growing advice is only useful if the numbers are honest. This page explains where our figures come from, how we label them, and how to tell us when something is wrong.

Where the data comes from

Cultivation parameters are taken from university extension services, government and FAO publications, and open-access scientific reviews. Each species page lists its sources with links. We do not use shop product pages as a primary source for numbers.

Ranges, not single numbers

Temperatures, humidity, timing and yield vary with strain, substrate and setup, so we show ranges. A single precise number would suggest certainty that does not exist. Treat every figure as a starting point to verify for your own strain and conditions.

Confidence labels

• literature-range: the range is reported by one or more published sources.
• estimated: derived from closely related species or from incomplete sources; shown so you know it is softer.
• measured: taken from controlled trials or our own tracked grows (used only when that is true).

If we do not have a reliable value, the field is left empty rather than filled with a guess.

Review dates

Species pages show when the data was last reviewed. Pages are re-checked when new sources appear or when a reader reports a problem.

What we leave out

We do not make health or treatment claims; where traditional medicinal use is mentioned it is described as traditional use only. We do not identify wild mushrooms and we do not say whether a mushroom is safe to eat. We do not cover psychoactive or poisonous species.

How AI is used

Text on this site is drafted with AI assistance and then checked against the cited sources before publication. The AI Photo Agronomist and AI Grow Consultant are AI tools: they answer from our database and can still be wrong. Their output is guidance for your own cultivation, not a diagnosis you should rely on for important decisions; when confidence is low they say so.

Ads, partners and affiliate links

Today the site shows no advertising and contains no affiliate links. If that changes, such links will be clearly marked and will never influence the data or the order in which species and tools are presented.

Corrections

Found an error or a better source? Email hello@mushroomsgrowing.com with the page address and what should change. Confirmed corrections are made as soon as we can verify them, and the page's review date is updated.
