Mushroom Growing

Timeline Planner

Plan the whole grow on a calendar — from the day you inoculate through colonization, cold shock where it's needed, pinning and each harvest — using the species' own timing.

Set an inoculation date and the planner lays out dated milestones to the final flush. A pace control lets you plan against the fast or cautious end of each phase, so you can build in a buffer. Timings are temperature-sensitive — warmer speeds things up, cooler slows them down — so treat the schedule as a plan to adjust, not a fixed countdown.

Plan the grow

Dates run from the day you inoculate, using each species' colonization and fruiting timing.

Optimistic uses the fast end of each phase; cautious the slow end. Plan buffers accordingly.

Timings are literature-range/estimated and shift with strain, substrate and temperature — treat the plan as a schedule to adjust, not a countdown. Shiitake and reishi run long; oysters are quick.

How to use it

  1. Pick your species. Colonization and fruiting timing load from the database, including whether a cold shock is needed.
  2. Set the inoculation date. The day spawn meets substrate — every milestone counts from here.
  3. Set flushes and pace. How many flushes to plan, and whether to use the optimistic, typical or cautious end of each phase.
  4. Read the schedule. Dated milestones for colonization, cold shock, pinning and each harvest, with the total run in days and weeks.

Questions

How long until mushrooms fruit?

It varies by species. Oysters can fruit within two to three weeks of inoculation; shiitake on sawdust can take two months of colonization before it ever fruits.

What is a cold shock?

A sharp temperature drop that triggers fruiting in some species. Shiitake needs 4 °C for 24 hours or a 10–15 °C drop once the block is fully colonized.

How many flushes will I get?

Two or three is typical for most gourmet species, each smaller than the last, roughly a couple of weeks apart. Some give one strong flush and little more.

Does temperature change the timeline?

Yes. Warmer speeds colonization, cooler slows it, so the plan is a schedule to adjust against your own logs.
